EVENT: Budget cuts and bio majors: planning ahead

Come hear from 4 faculty members: Kathy Foltz, Stephen Poole (MCDB) and Thomas Even and Susan Mazer (EEMB) to have your questions answered, and learn how YOU can plan ahead to declare the right biology major for you. Here are some potential topics to be covered:

General overview about selecting a major and "planning ahead"
Things to think about in terms of selecting a major (job prep, professional school)
Why choose a specialized major?
When to start thinking about research
Why think about research?
What the budget cuts (might) mean for bio sci undergraduates
Upper division lab classes
Participation in cross listed graduate seminars (MCDB 194s)
Trends in biology - looking to the future and how to prepare now (systems biology, for example)

The faculty would like to make this an interactive workshop, not a lecture so please come with any questions you might have, or post them on the wall for this event. This is going to be an EXTREMELY helpful event and we are very lucky to have 4 faculty members willing to dedicate their time to helping us on the path to success. I hope to see all of you there!

Also, please add the event on facebook if you didn't get an invitation: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?invites&eid=302563004545

See you there!

McNair Scholarship Program

One of the many resources UCSB has to offer is the opportunity to get involved in undergraduate research programs.

The McNair Scholars Program provides federally funded opportunities for underrepresented (minority and/or first generation, low-income) undergraduate students to conduct research and receive mentorship for up to two years. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to present their findings at national conferences while receiving personal and academic mentorship from faculty and staff. Other benefits include fee waivers for graduate school applications and stipends for completing research during the summer.

We are now accepting sophomore applicants for our February 1st, 2010 deadline. Information about our program and application instructions can be found on our website: http://mcnair.ucsb.edu/. Minimum requirements are a 3.0 GPA, letters of recommendation from two faculty members and intent to pursue a PhD program. Applicants wishing to enter professional post-baccalaureate programs such as law, medicine, accounting, etc. are not encouraged to apply.

For more information about the program please join us for an informational (see flyer attached) on
